The U. S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it has found no evidence that the active ingredient of Viagra and the generic of Propecia, finasteride, is dangerous.
The agency said it was investigating if the generic of the popular hair loss drug Propecia is being recalled.
“These findings are disturbing information that is essential to our health care systems,” said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
In a letter written by the agency, the agency said it was reviewing the results of a recent study that found finasteride is less likely to cause sexual side effects than other drugs used to treat male pattern baldness.
The company that produces Propecia said it was unaware of the results of the study until it became aware of them.
“The findings of this study are not clinically significant,” the letter said.

A University of Auckland study has found that men who took a high dose of Viagra, a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, were more likely to have heart disease compared to those who had no erectile dysfunction.

“This study shows that a high dose of Viagra, used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, was associated with higher rates of cardiovascular disease, and this finding is consistent with previous findings,” said lead author Dr Helen C. Cunha.
“We wanted to see whether the higher Viagra doses were associated with a greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease. This was the first study of this kind to examine this association,” said the paper’s authors. “We found that men who were taking the highest dose of Viagra were more likely to have a heart attack or stroke than men who were not taking the standard dose.”

“This study shows that a higher dose of Viagra was associated with a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction. This study also shows that men who take Viagra for erectile dysfunction have a higher risk of developing heart disease, which is associated with a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease.”
